So this is a ununique concept I had that I haven't ever really heard of before. What if there were a new pikmin type that acts as a captain. This could definitly play well into a pikmin game which only has one playable captain. This pikmin would have to work with candypop buds rather than onions, because you would have to limit thr number of captains you can have at a give time.
Imagine a cave system like the one in Pikmin 2. Each sublevel would be a puzzle or a time based challenge. The amount of candypop buds given (minus 1) would equal the number of captains needed to complete a challenge. The captain pikmin wouldn't follow you into the next sublevel, but there you would be given (or possibly not given) new candypop buds.
The captain pikmin could be rainbow pikmin, because of the different role from regular pikmin (the controller of all colors) and because of Olimar's whistle colors.
I know its very strange, but it could work.

Well, since Pikmin can be thrown higher than captains, I feel if Nintendo doesn't fix it, that system could be exploited quite a bit. Other than that, it's an interesting mechanic.

I feel that Pikmin shouldn't play the roles, because then why have the captains? I feel enemies that can be temporarily tamed to be captains would be good.

Storyline could prohibit you from having multiple captains. Perhaps it could be in a different way. Maybe you don't play as the Pikmin captains at all, but rather they have specific AI and can do certain task. The main captain, lets just say Olimar, would still be responsible for controlling these Pikmin Captains like throwing them and assigning them to task. Imagine sort of a "Go Here" mechanic like in Pikmin 3, but rather than have the captains walk there and tell them what to do when they get there, you tell them what to do before you send them. Perhaps these Pikmin have ultra sensing ability towards a whistle and can hear it from anywhere in the map to return to Olimar (you would call them back via the gamepad map). Some of the task you could assign them to would be retrieving Pikmin from part of the map and bringing them back to Olimar, throwing Olimar across a ledge, escorting Pikmin to a specific area, ect. I could see an enemy working, and it does make sense since we already have enemies who can manipulate the Pikmin. All I can think of now is just like Olimar comes onto the planet and finds the Pikmin, but the Pikmin are being controlled by some weird creature which attacks Olimar by throwing the Pikmin at him, but the Pikmin don't want to fight Olimar so it just becomes a fist-fight in between Olimar and the creature to establish dominance. If a creature like this did exist on the planet though, it would explain how the Pikmin are able to survive on the planet themselves. I still can't help but think this creature would be somehow related to the Pikmin though.
