It's a pretty well-known fact that the regions in Pikmin 1 and 2 are the same locations for the most part, but Pikmin 3 has entirely new layouts that don't resemble the geography of 1 and 2 in the slightest. Sure, they may have a similar theme such as the Distant Tundra resembling the Valley of Repose, but there isn't a direct resemblance when it comes to the layout. Could it be nearby, or could it be on an opposite pole? How do the rest of you think Pikmin 3's areas match up with the rest?
While I'm at it, do you all think that Pikmin 4's areas will resemble Pikmin 3's similar to what Pikmin 2 did, or do you think we'll get entirely new regions?

There are apparently mountains in the distance of the Sandbelching Meerslug that resemble the mountains near the Final Trial. I don't really have photo evidence but that's an interesting little reference if it's true.
I think the time interval between Pikmin 2 and 3 was more than between 1 and 2. Olimar and Louie seem substantially older and even the Pikmin seem significantly different by the time Koppaites need to visit (not to mention the Drake travels 279,000 light years in 6 seconds; that's gotta have some relativistic effects). So PNF-404 could have more drastically changed its terrain, even if the Koppaites happened to land in different areas.
Also I think that the area developers wanted to start almost from scratch with Pikmin 3, since 3 throwable leaders, Rock and Winged (terrain-defying) Pikmin types, and the Go Here! function were now central to gameplay. Of course there are probably elements that persist from the previous games' area design, like specific areas of elevation change and big arenas for boss and mini-boss fights. But Pikmin 3 took advantage of a bigger space to build in and more varied mechanics like lily pads.
I think the best place to look for terrain throwbacks in Pikmin 3 would be Mission Mode. I mean, Forgotten Cove is pretty obvious, but it seems like Shaded Garden, Silver Lake, and others may have more references to offer to the discerning eye.
And I do think that Pikmin 4 will probably reference Pikmin 3's areas, but just a little bit. It's hard not to now that they're so big, and most players of Pikmin 4 are likely to have at least tried Pikmin 3 and picked up on its interesting area design. But that's not to say Pikmin 4 will be a recycler; if anything I think it'll have bigger, better areas with more technically demanding themes and puzzles to offer now that it knows which console to work under (please?) and that console can handle more. Pikmin 2 is not bad for renewing old areas, but I always embraced the new things about it: that brings this great feeling of exploration as you play, and with the Pikmin series there are lots of little area details you can miss at first but totally admire when you find them later.

I think that Pikmin 4 will reference all the games. It depends on how many areas there are, and whether or not there will be caves. (Maybe there will be Pikmin 2 cave references). I'm not sure though.

Speaking of mission mode, I wonder how the Clockwork Chasm will integrate itself into future maps. I personally would love an industrial area.

Speaking of mission mode, I wonder how the Clockwork Chasm will integrate itself into future maps. I personally would love an industrial area. I love that area! I hope they add more industrial areas too, like the bulldozer in the Pikmin short films. Considering the fact that there's little pieces of proof everywhere that shows that humans did use to exist on the Pikmin planet, having an industrial area might uncover more on what happened to the humans. If most of the areas in Pikmin 4 are set in industrial areas, it would definitely make the game stand out from the others, considering the first 3 games were mostly set in nature like areas (well... except for the times in Pikmin 2 when you traveled underground). It would also be able to add more puzzles using gears and such (like Clockwork Chasm), possibly more elements, more enemies (possibly robot types), and more pikmin types, considering the fact that the onion type is based on its surroundings.

Our friend Dave did a really good video on his theory as to why this may be true.

I agree, it's very strange how the planet changed from something that resembles present-day Earth to something that resembles Pangaea Ultima very quickly. I don't want to get too lost in details, but... If PNF-404 really did go 250 million years in the future, how is it that the Pikmin and Onions don't evolve? Or several of the other creatures, for that matter? Augh. Curse you Nintendo for breaking logic.
I think it's likely that P4 will reference P3's areas in some way, I just don't know how. Though I think they shouldn't be remixes, like in P1 and P2. To me, they were cutting some corners in area development... But anyway, perhaps a section of an old area joined to a whole new one...? I'm not sure. That aside, I loved all the puzzles in P3's areas, and I hope P4 will do the same. I also hope we get more areas too, because without P2-style caves, P3 felt a lot shorter. Oh, and if they decide to bring back P2-style caves, I really hope they're not randomized. Admittedly, the randomization of P2's caves was interesting, but I think it'd be pretty awesome if each sublevel was in the style of P3-style caves. P3 did an excellent job capturing that subterranean feeling, and I sure hope they bring that back in P4.
Okay, sorry, kinda went off on a tangent there, but regarding the evolution of the areas: I'm actually writing a couple stories about just that! If you guys are interested, I'll post them over in the Literature section so you can see them!

I mean I would add more but my answer to why that would be is, "It's a video game."
However if you think about it many of the creatures did evolve. Skitter leaf's (leaves?) now are able to defend themselves and hunt. There are MANY more enemies are located in water regions. Armored Cannon Larva have adapted into snowy areas further than in Pikmin 2, by even using the snow as their main way of attack. Joustmites could be taken as further evolved Burrow-nits, some even having the ability to fly. The Bosses in Pikmin 3 are the largest of any creature we've previously seen on PNF-404. Swooping Snitchbugs now have learned to pick up captains as well. Nectarous Dandefly could be a further evolved version of a Honeywisp. Medusal Slurkers could be evolved forms of Jellyfloats. Iridescent flint beetles have taken on a completely different look. Hermit Crawmads now have HUGE variants. I could go on but you get the point.
But of course the fact remains that not everything has changed, and to that I say that they haven't changed because they don't need to. Think about it, as far as we know, the only thing that preys on Bulborbs is Pikmin, and without the captains help, they've almost gone extinct 3 times now. And look at how many bulborbs there are in ALL of the games. The same could be said for other enemies as well.
Lastly, it could be the evolution of these creatures are just very slow due to the nature of them. its pretty safe to assume that PNF-404 is earth after heavy radiation, and we don't really know how things in that realm function completely.
Aside from that I don't think "remixing" the stages in the first two games was at all a lazy thing or a time saver. They still re-textured everything, and changed the layout of the maps a whole lot, in fact it may have been easier to start from scratch. I honestly think it was either for the lore of the game, or just a fan service. Either way I don't think it was because of cutting corners.
