I have implemented this idea in my own fangame, and thought it was worth mentioning here.
Rock Pikmin essentially took over the role of Purple Pikmin in Pikmin 3, and I'm hopefully not the only one who thinks they were a trifle overpowered (they render the Yellow Wollywog and Joustmite easy enemies, for example). So I figured in the next Pikmin installment could feature Rock Pikmin as a power-up for any regular Pikmin, and Purple Pikmin would be reinstated.
Rubble in this game, rather than having nectar underneath it, would be collected by a leader. Then, while the leader is holding a Pikmin, they could activate the rubble like a spray, covering the Pikmin and converting it into a temporary makeshift Rock Pikmin. Then the "Rock Pikmin" could be thrown, like a track-and-field hammer, giving that particular Pikmin a huge boost in throw speed and damage. Once the Pikmin hits something the shell would break and it would become the regular Pikmin again.
If crystal remained as an obstacle in this scenario, it could just be broken with one or two "Rock Pikmin," since they would be more strongly thrown.
What do you think? For me, this balances out the game a little more while keeping Purple Pikmin and still including Rock Pikmin. And it's sort of an extra Pikmin enhancer alongside the sprays.

So you're saying Rock Pikmin would no longer have pellets and onions and only be temporary improvements for various Pikmin?

So you're saying Rock Pikmin would no longer have pellets and onions and only be temporary improvements for various Pikmin? Well, yes. Rock Pikmin could still be real Pikmin, but this way Purple Pikmin could be re-included in a main game without being trounced in ability by Rock Pikmin.

Well, rock pikmin don't necessarily replace purple pikmin, for example, rock pikmin can't cling on or carry 10x their weight. Purple pikmin can't break glass/crystal walls and aren't immune to being crushed.

Purple pikmin can't break glass/crystal walls and aren't immune to being crushed. That's true. I suppose this power isn't so much for bringing back Purple Pikmin as it is for nullifying Rock Pikmin. As it is I think Rock Pikmin are overpowered. But if Rock Pikmin were only nullified in that they weren't immune to crushing, then their only unique trait would be breaking crystal, since extra damage is also an attribute of Purple Pikmin. I just thought this would be an interesting way to distribute Rock Pikmin's power, and the idea of a rock-covered Pikmin always seemed more like a power-up for me, even before Pikmin 3 came out.

I am always upset when people even relate Rock and Purple Pikmin.
Rock Pikmin weigh the same as a normal Pikmin. Rock Pikmin carry the same as a normal Pikmin. Rock Pikmin are hard and break glass and crystal. Rock Pikmin don't cling on and only do initial damage. Rock Pikmin are immune to crushing and piercing. Rock Pikmin have the speed of a normal Pikmin.
Purple Pikmin weight ten times a normal Pikmin. Purple Pikmin carry ten times the weight of a normal Pikmin. Purple Pikmin stun enemies. Purple Pikmin do cling on, and although they do more damage on the first hit, you can only utilize that hit well once. Purple Pikmin have no immunities. Purple Pikmin are slow.
The only similarities Rock and Purple Pikmin have is that they do more damage right the first time they hit an enemy, and becuase of this are labeled as "the powerhouses." Meanwhile lets demonstrate the similarities to the other Pikmin.
All other Pikmin have at least one immunity. All other Pikmin (aside from white) walk (and fly) the same speed. All other Pikmin carry the same amount. All other Pikmin (aside from white) have onions.
Rock Pikmin are literally more similar to the other types of Pikmin than they are to purple. I wish people would stop saying this. Also Red Pikmin are powerhouses too and actually have the ability to effectively charge.
