Pikmin is an intriguing series for many reasons, but one I don't see brought up to often is how it marks high scores for each story mode. Pikmin 1 made this abundantly clear by your second playthrough. Having got all ship parts in 30 days or less, you see that the game actually tracks that and shows you can do it in less. Pikmin 2 wasn't as focused on it, but still included the feature. Pikmin 3 is more like 1 than 2 in terms of this system.
What I'm trying to get at is this: is Pikmin the kind of game really meant for such a system?

You raise an interesting question. I'd say with the high intensity of Mission Mode, high scores are appropriate. But the general mood of Pikmin is not fast-paced (even on a time crunch in the first game) and often it encourages taking your time. The purpose of high scores is good for hardcore players or hardcore thinkers who want to increase how efficiently they manage Pikmin (which I feel is especially focused in Pikmin 3 with functions like Go Here! designed only to increase player efficiency). But generally I think Pikmin is not an arcade game that wants you to beat your friends; it wants you to focus but take your time, and admire the aesthetics of the game as well as the action.
Personally, every time I saw the high scores for Pikmin 2 I didn't think that I had gotten a better score that time; I just thought, "Shoot, look how many Pikmin I lost to electricity. I'd better be more careful next time." I thought the high scores actually serve as a reminder of how you perform as a leader. So I think they're fine being in the game, it's a game after all. But maybe if they were called "Stats" or something like that.
I think Challenge Mode and Mission Mode are Pikmin arcades, and they're Silver-Lake-Remixedly how-did-someone-score-that-muchly fun arcades at that. I wouldn't say Pikmin is better such a format; it's just a different setting with different constraints, and if anything it offers a nice fast-paced, in-your-face, wholly Pikminy challenge that complements the main game well and benefits the game's feel as a whole.

First of all, wow, that was a lot of hyphenated modifiers in one paragraph. Second of all, I agree with Challenge/Mission mode being more arcade focused. I also like your idea of the scores being more of reminders rather than high scores to brag about. Pikmin just doesn't seem like the kind of game that needs high scores in my opinion.

Usually, the high scores people brag about is how few days it takes to beat a game, and other such challenges. Pikmin 3 really added a high score to Mission Mode worth sharing, the medals.
