Just a heads up as this has spoilers for the end of Pikmin 3. Also, I'm not talking about the beginning of the first Pikmin.
Remember how the end of the game's credits have the Pikmin go out to investigate something that fell from the sky off in the distance? This what I think it is.
I'm under the impression that the object is a spaceship. I think plenty of other people thought this, but I'll try to explain more. It's seen that the Plasm Wraith regenerated soon after its defeat, but there was nothing it could do as the Koppaites were able to leave the planet with Olimar. Around that time, conveniently (and unfortunately) a ship must've flown in proximity, and the Plasm Wraith saw it as a suitable new target. Assuming it was behind the crash of the SS Drake in the beginning of the game, it would crash that oncoming ship too.
In addition to the above, the 4th game can start after that, with the unlucky crew of that ship having to survive on PNF-404 and escape. I can imagine the newer game having yet another set of playable characters. The new characters will have to reunite with each other like the previous game, and even find components to allow them to leave the planet like the first game-- with the help of the Pikmin, of course. They'd also have to deal with the Plasm Wraith as well as Louie seeing as he remained on the planet yet again.

I have no doubt in my mind that it is a ship. I mean based on the premise that the Pikmin games have this in every situation. I mean, its possible Nintendo could throw a curve ball but I doubt it.
Honestly I think the ship is more representation that the next game is coming, rather than setting the plot for the next game.
Anyway, all of you're reasoning i assume is based off of Dave's Umibuzo Theory. Please keep in mind this isn't cannon (yet.)
