I've been working on this for a few weeks now. The game will take place between Pikmin 2 and 3. Hocotate Freight has become a booming success and cultural phenomena, which attracts attention to other daring explorers looking to make a quick buck. The game will follow the adventures of a band of space pirates (Maybe something else. I'm not quite sure yet) who stumble upon the pikmin and some other stuff happens. I really haven't figured out most of the story yet, but it'll involve the collection of treasure like Pikmin 2 did. I wanna use all unique assets. Olimar, the Pikmin, and the Gui in the corner are all sort of placeholders.
The game is still really early in development. The prototype I have currently has some depth ordering issues ("empty" boxes around some stuff), lack of animations, and the collisions can get a bit weird. It also suffers from some major lag issues if you have more than 30 pikmin.

It looks pretty interesting. I have no knowledge in this field (although I have always wanted to make PC games). Good luck!

Just a minor update; I made the S.S.Hornet's salvage sequence better: gyazo.com/c19fd7f69031f4cb396836138dfedd27I'm gonna try to refrain from giving a blow-by-blow on progress. I'm just really proud of how it looks. :>

Do you have any plan for a public beta? Since I beat Pikmin 2, i have always wanted a 3D fan game.

It's been a while since the last update, but the project isn't dead yet. I think I'm gonna try porting the project to Unity. The current engine, Gamemaker Studio, can't handle 3D graphics very well. I'm struggling 40 fps with 100 unanimated pikmin, much less an entire detailed map. I'll post more details once I get the new engine running. I have to learn the ropes of Unity first.

I'm currently planning on having 5 regions. During the crash-landing of your ship at the beginning of the game, 5 vital ship components will be jolted loose, including the gluon drive. Without the gluon drive installed, the ship won't be able to exert enough force to break the gravitational pull of PNF-404, meaning you're stranded. The gluon drive will serve as a sort of global goal like the cosmic drive key did in pikmin 3. The other 4 parts will act as methods of progression to the next region like the globe pieces did in Pikmin 2. Installing a new ship piece will make your ship stable enough to move on to a more distant region.

Sounds like a good idea. Gamemaker has produced some really great games, but the majority of them are 2d, while Unity excels at 3d games.

I've been trying to make a game with Unity and so far it's been pretty merciful for someone like me who has no knowledge of game development (The game is only 0.1% complete at this point and it's been 3 or 4 days, but Unity hasn't been IMPOSSIBLE so far for me). Good idea to try porting.

Oh my god, I just watched the first video. It looks amazing!
I've been thinking of making a Pikmin game in 3D myself, but I'm not that experienced with Unity. I might start making one later on, but that'd be probably in a year or so. Can we have a progress update?

Unfortunately, due to Nintendo's recent behavior towards fan projects, we've decided to put the project on hiatus until the scene clears up. We agreed that it'd be better to wait versus putting a ton of effort into this only to learn that it can't get released. HOPEFULLY Nintendo'll become a bit more lenient towards fan projects in the future. We'll just have to see. In terms of progress we made, I got most of the core movement and camera things working in Unity. We also planned out all of the regions and most of the treasure, and we even have some music composed.
