Here are some strategies that I've developed throughout my many playthroughs of Pikmin 3.
1.BOMB ROCKS
It can be easy to forget that Bomb Rocks are usually an option when facing tougher enemies. Remember, all Pikmin types can carry them now, so don't worry about facing enemies in water.
Unlike Pikmin 1, bombs have practical uses besides walls. They can instantly blast berries off of Burgeoning Spiderworts, and can instantly unearth buried fruit or pellets. Use them whenever possible!
2.USE WINGED PIKMIN WHENEVER POSSIBLE
Under proper command, Winged Pikmin can destroy alot of the games challenges. Being able to fly allows them to reach fruit that other Pikmin have to be thrown up towards and can severely rape Scornets and the Quaggled Mireclops. Their lack of attack power would seem to get in the way, but...
3.ULTRA SPICY SPRAYS
A returning addition from Pikmin 2, the Spicy Spray can boost the Pikmin's speed and attack, as well as flower up any leaf or bud Pikmin. Unlike Pikmin 2, Pikmin farming berries will head back to the plant after harvesting a berry. This seemingly small change turns what was once an "only when I really need it" power up into a part of standard gameplay. The double spray glitch doesn't work anymore, but it hardly matters as from you're second day in the Distant Tundra, you have access to these plants. At the start of any given day, take 5 Pikmin (preferably Wings as they'll be easier to round up at the end of the day) and throw them at the area's Spiderwort(s). Winged Pikmin also don't have to worry about potential enemies in their farming path, and they take a faster route. Use sprays whenever you feel like you need it, or if you have something you need to get back before the end of the day.
4.GO HERE, GO THERE, GO EVERYWHERE
Multiple captains aren't a new addition to the series. What IS new however is the ability to remote control them to various points on the map. You might've noticed that the area maps in Pikmin 3 are much bigger than they were in past titles. This is to encourage you to use the "Go Here" feature. At any point, look down at the Gamepad and touch it. This will pause the game and allow you to look around. If you want a captain to go somewhere, touch the "Go Here" icon and that captain, along his/her Pikmin squad will walk over there. Always keep an eye out for potential enemies on the captain's route as their Pikmin are basically sitting ducks for all manor of creatures. With that in mind, use this command to have Pikmin working on all corners of the map. It's also handy for rounding up stray Pikmin at the end of the day as you can have three search parties going in every direction.
