As everyone here knows, Pikmin 4 is in development, but we know little to nothing about it.
What if it was open world? I think for story and gameplay progression, it would have to be linear, but a larger more vast world, which would allow you to travel between areas seamlessly and land at different points throughout each area would be awesome. Let me explain my idea in more detail: Pikmin 4 would be split into 4 or 5 areas. When you begin the game, you will only have access to one. Once you beat the area boss, you will unlock the next area, allowing you to beat that area's boss, and so on until you unlock the final area. You would still have the ability to collect what ever item type is needed in Pikmin 4 (like treasure or fruit) but this would allow people to also playthrough the game quickly. As you explore each area, you will find points on the map that can be used as landing zones. You won't be able to take off from a different landing zone then you started (Pikmin will go to the zone that you landed on at the start of the day, and will only be safe in that zone during the day's end), but you will be able to land at any zone you discovered at the beginning of the day. This would allow for a seamless open world that is still split off into areas (kind of like in Xenoblade X, but with some differences like landing zones)
What do you think of this idea?

Oh! It's a good idea! We'd be in total immersion in the world of Pikmin!

I think a large contiguous worlds with different landing points would be pretty cool. They'd have to find a creative way to transition between different terrain and climate so we still have areas set in the various seasons. Could fit nicely into the series and would really open the game up to even more speedrunning and optimization.

Not total open world. If there was a main story, and a few side quests, sure, but not Skyrim or FallOut status. If there were areas like in past Pikmin games the player could go to, as well as there being quests, I'd be game for it.
