Day Eleven: The Parched Valley
We return here to take out an electric fence and clear an above ground cave tucked among some sandy dunes- light it up with some yellows and we get some mushroom paths. We’re confronted by a new type of Bulborb- all of its skin is a dark bronze, and its back it spiked like a Horny Devil- all of its skin is scaly. It has two yellow, reptilian eyes, and it squirts violet acid from its eyes (like the lizard does blood), that burns non-white Pikmin. This is the Scaly Bulborb. There are two in this cavern.
Among the fire geyser and glowcaps here, we procure two treasures, one of them buried in crystals. We can use the Pikmin to dig out a collapsed in passage entrance that leads us to a new chamber where some Bejeweled Pharoaches assault us as well as a Burrowing Snagret!
We see a new hazard beyond them- what appears to be quicksand! The ground sifts down into a whirlpool like end, where normal Pikmin get devoured by the sand. But the Spiny Pikmin can traverse the sands with ease, practically rolling across the sand along their spikes.
There’s a pile of twigs we can set the Spiny Pikmin on, who take them to the crux of the whirlpool and clog the flow so other Pikmin can continue. Now we see a new room, with a Swooping Snitchbug and two Bearded Amprats, guarding a new treasure. There’s also a spicy berry plant for us to harvest.
A wall blocks us off from what appears to be an arena- after demolishing it, we see a pit of sand where the Pileated Snagret emerges and squawks. It begins hoping around, shaking the ground beneath. Use a spicy spray and throw some yellows and spinys upon its face. It will leave little spurs in the sand that spoon into the ground. While they don’t kill Pikmin, it traps them a bit, which allows the boss to eat them up. Spiny Pikmin are immune and can escape easy. Its head is the most vulnerable, but its health is a bit annoying. It will drop a newfound treasure that allows us to escape the cavern.
There’s an outdoor area we can clear before ending the day that lies beyond the Pileated Snagret’s den. There’s a bouncing mushroom puzzle that requires tossing captains upon the bouncy fungus to recover a new treasure and build a haystack that spills back at base, but before we arrive at the mushroom we experience a new, tough enemy. There’s a tiny swirl mark in the sand. If a Pikmin steps on it, the ground plummets down and sand falls into the gaping maw of an insect like creature, much like the Sand-Belching Meerslug from Pikmin 3. We have to throw bomb rocks into the vortex (which can be found in a rusty can nearby), which blasts the creature out of the sand, all of its health gone. It’s an antlion-like creature with a chubby torso and two golden mandibles that originally popped out of the ground at the bottom of the sand pit. Its head is the same as an Oblivious Wantler. This is the Swirl-Sucking Wantler, a technical cousin of its peaceful transportation unit relative. Once defeated, its sandy pit unveils a new treasure.
Let’s harvest berries the rest of the day.
